The project will be carried out at the Institute for Condensed Matter and Complex Systems (ICMS), within the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh. The Soft Matter group within the ICMS has an international reputation for advancing the understanding of the flow and dynamics of soft materials, and a proven track record of impact ful industrial engagement, supported by the Edinburgh Complex Fluids Partnership (ECFP), which operates within the school. The group currently consists of about 11 Principal Investigators, 17 postdocs and technical staff, and about 30 PhDs. This research excellence is underpinned by extensive facilities for rheological characterization, light scattering, and imaging. These include custom setups for studying non-rheometric flows, combined high-speed rheo-confocal imaging, and dedicated cryo-EM facilities for imaging opaque materials.

Prof. Poon is an expert on arrested and glassy colloidal systems, and recent work with Dr. Royer and others has elucidated universal physics in shear thickening and jamming in frictional and adhesive granular suspensions, collapse mechanisms in colloidal gels, and novel rheological behaviors in composite granular / colloidal gel suspensions.
